Eulogy for lost sons

I’m rocking you in my arms
as I did when you were a babe
as I did as you nursed, my love
suckling nutrients into your young bones
suckling breath into your young lungs, my love

Your eyes have fixed to the sky
eyes on your maker
as your rattled breath
shakes my core
I’m willing my life into you
only that I could give my life
for yours

You’re grasping my arms
seeking comfort
seeking strength
come here, my child
let my heart bleed into yours
gather strength from my essence
stay child
stay

Today was your execution day
you stood before the courts
cast out for your cocoa skin
cast out because your hue reflects the night
GUILTY!
The crowd jeered for your silencing
before you could make your defence

Your executioner walks in armed
ready to take your life force
you cry, hands raised
“Please! Don’t shoot”
you cries are unheard
swallowed by the wind
Silver rained from the sky
searing your tender flesh

MAMA!

You scream for me as your hold on this world slips
I’m running to catch you
running to save you
please, don’t leave me
hold on a little longer, my child
don’t close your eyes

I see you laying on the pavement
curled on on your side
wound tight
like you once lay in my womb

Oh child!

Didn’t I warn you?
Didn’t I warn you to stay indoors
to hide in the shadows
away from the dangers of the outside world?
Didn’t I warn you to stay behind the walls of our tribe?
You were safe behind our walls
You were safe in my arms

You’re getting quieter now
my clothes soaked with your blood
your clothes soaked with my tears
a grotesque embrace
my cries for help
swallowed by the wind

I lay on top of you as I feel your soul leave
I close my eyes and beg the heavens
to take me with you
With your exit
you’ve taken my essence with you
with your exit
my happiness has evaporated

Sleep child
your  enemies can no longer hurt you
sleep child
I’ll protect you

I’m rocking you in my arms
as I did when you were a babe
as I did as you nursed, my love
suckling nutrients into your young bones
suckling breath into your young lungs, my love

Kissing your head, I sing you home

Free at last, free at last
I thank God I’m free at last
Free at last, free at last
I thank God I’m free at last
